Those who have excess branches and timber not suitable for the fireplace could make biochar which has the effect of building better soil by providing homes in the soil for microbes. This is far more beneficial than just burning it and being left with a pile of ash.
I am presently reading about Ewan Campbell and his findings which turned a non productive farm into the best in the district and has helped many farmers across NZ. Suggest farmers consider cropping hemp. Multi crops per year and way more productive than pine trees. Many uses including structural blocks (add lime), clothing and other materials, pulp & paper, hemp oil, food source & for animal feed too. Hemp is known to grow in poor soil and helps the soil too. Hemp as shelter for other crops too.
